The Tana dell’Istrice makes a perfect base from which to explore Rome. You can enjoy nights of peace and tranquillity after a day in the vibrant and busy city where ‘all roads lead’.You can purchase a special ‘day out in Lazio’ ticket (BIRG) locally for €10.5 which will cover all your public transport for the day including your return train ticket from the local station (10 minutes drive away – leave your car there in the free car park) plus all buses and metro in the city and all local trains within Lazio (for example to Tivoli). The journey takes one hour and five minutes and you arrive in the very heart of Rome at the Stazione Termini relaxed and ready to enjoy the sights. There is so much to see in this extraordinary city, one day will certainly not be enough: the Vatican Museum alone would take a whole day to see properly. Some of the finest examples of Roman architecture are here: The Colosseum, The Forum, The Pantheum and many more excavated sights, as well as museums brimming with ancient sculptures and artefacts. The city is also famous for its Baroque monuments (such as the Trevi Fountain) and buildings and works of art from the period, notably sculpture by Bernini and painting by Caravaggio. As the centre of the Roman Catholic world, Rome boasts many magnificent churches as well as the seat of the Pope himself at St Peter’s. Even if you are not a believer you could not help but be stunned by the splendour of masterpieces like the Byzantine mosaics at S Maria in Trastevere. Some of the finest examples of Italian art are to be found in the galleries here. A trip to the Borghese Gallery also gives you a view inside a beautiful villa, once the home of Pauline Bonaparte, where works by Caravaggio and Bernini amongst others are on display.A day wandering the streets and sipping coffee or Prosecco in a stunning square with a view of a Bernini fountain or The Pantheon is hard to beat for a more leisurely trip.Don’t forget the shopping! The designer shops of the Via Condotti are a must, even if it’s only to press your nose against the panes and there are many more affordable outlets for all budgets. Italian style is universally adored and Rome has it all: history, art, architecture, fashion, food – whatever your taste, you’ll find it here.
