We have returned to this quiet hotel many times since discovering it in Lazio near Rome four years ago. It's the perfect base to enjoy a flavour of this virtually unspoilt quiet region of central Italy on the border between Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany. It’s just over an hour away from Rome by train, while a short drive takes you to World Heritage site of Civita Bagnoreggio in Lazio. Just 25 minutes down the road is Orvieto in Umbria, with its breathtaking black and white striped Cathedral, incredible Etruscan remains and such panoramic views of the surrounding landscape that makes you wish you could paint. This top corner of Lazio, just 10 miles south of Tuscany, is beautiful throughout the year, but particularly in spring with poppies in the hedgerows. The region of central Italy close to Rome surrounding the hotel is peppered with places perfect for daytrips; the Terme or thermal baths at Viterbo, the volcanic Lake Bolsena, the incredible gorge on the way to Todi, the world famous Monster Gardens of Bomarzo and the amphitheatre at Sutri. And of course it’s near Rome, which is just over an hour away, and quite near Florence, which is about two hours away by train. Arezzo with its gigantic antique market is 45 minutes up the A1.We have returned to this quiet hotel many times since discovering it in Lazio near Rome four years ago.
