About Sergio Mottura Wines
The Mottura estate of some 130 hectares has been in the family since 1933. It nestles on the border of Northern Lazio and Umbria, between the hills of Civitella d'Agliano and the fertile plain of the Tiber valley in the Orvieto DOC. Sergio is an award winning “boutique” wine producer, creating a wide range of high quality products from Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay, Grechetto and other local varieties, as well as traditional Orvieto wine. Sergio’s trademark porcupine symbol derives from the fact that his land is cultivated organically and has become an ideal habitat for the indigenous porcupine.
Hotel guests may book a “wine experience”, in which they visit the vineyards and witness the wine-making process. They’ll also be taken through the historical underground cellars dug deep in the rock under the hotel, before ending with a superb dinner where delicious local seasonal food will be perfectly paired with a range of wines.
On the vineyard’s gentle slopes the organically grown grapes have found their natural habitat, prospering in the volcanic soil. Records in the Orvieto archives from as far back as 1929 prove these hills have always been well-suited to the cultivation of vines, as some of the best Orvieto wine was produced here even then.
As in many other areas the old vines, planted generations ago, were grafted onto trees to provide support, according to the method passed down from the Etruscans. These have gradually been replaced by specialised modern vineyards, now extending to 40 hectares, to ensure premium quality. Local indigenous grape varieties have been selected, as they are most likely to yield the ideal fruit for wine making, while at the same time being most resistant to disease, which is essential for organic production methods.
